Mitchell Trubisky is unlikely to return to Bears in 2021 without a long playoff streak

Mitchell Trubisky’s future in Chicago may depend on how far he takes the Bears in the 2020 playoffs.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL GameDay Morning that there is no certainty that Bears will bring Trubisky back in 2021, but if the quarterback wins on Saturday against the New Orleans Saints and continues to win, maybe he can change his mind.

Trubisky’s future in Chicago was already in doubt after the team turned down his fifth-year option and acquired Nick Foles by trade before the 2020 season. Trubisky won his first two games, being elected holder, but was eliminated in the middle of a Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Still, with Bellows going 2-5 and leading to a skid in the middle of the six-game season before an injury in Week 12, perhaps Bears would not be in the playoffs without Trubisky’s game in the home stretch.

The fourth-year QB led an offensive that finally found an offensive groove in December, scoring more than 30 points in all four disputes in the month and going 3-1. Trubisky took advantage of an offensive that found its best game due to a healthy offensive line and the flight of second year runner-up David Montgomery. Trubisky excelled in the game’s action with an attack on the slope, and his newfound confidence earned him the job back, finishing 6-3 as a Bears starter this season.

Bears conquered the seventh seed for the first time not for a victory in Week 17, however, but for a defeat in Arizona.

Trubisky’s tenure has come under a lot of pressure since the Bears negotiated to select him as runner-up in the 2017 draft. Constant reminders of who Bears left out to pick him up have increased the pressure, but perhaps this season’s tumultuous events have led Trubisky to play loose, with nothing more to lose. Facing the Saints on Sunday, Trubisky still has a difficult hill to climb if he wants to remain Chicago’s QB in the future.

Trubisky accumulated a 29-21 record as a starter during his four seasons in Chicago and on Saturday afternoon will mark his second game in the playoff (0-1). The 26-year-old shot 10,609 yards with a 64% completion rate, with 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions so far in his NFL career.

The wild card game Bears-Saints beginsSunday at 4:40 pm ETand can be viewed on CBS, Nickelodeon, Amazon Prime Video, CBS All Access.
