Mitch McConnell opposes Marjorie Taylor Greene with ongoing removal efforts

Senate Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell criticized Georgia Republican House Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene for her belief in extremist conspiracy theories.

He is one of the few Republicans to speak out against the freshman congressman, even as Democrats trying to remove Greene from his recent assignments on the Education and Labor Commission and the House Budget Committee, and prevent her from being placed on any other. influential congressional committees in the future.

“Someone who suggested that perhaps no aircraft hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that the horrific school shootings were pre-staged and that the Clintons shot down JFK Jr.’s plane is not really living,” said McConnell, according to The hill. “This has nothing to do with the challenges that American families face or solid debates about the content that can strengthen our party.”

Among the theories she supported or publicized, Greene believes that a plane never reached the Pentagon during the 9/11 terrorist attacks; that former President Barack Obama was secretly a Muslim; that Black Lives Matters is a “domestic terrorist” organization; that the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump; whereas all school shootings were staged events with the aim of increasing regulations on firearms; that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton once cut a child’s face and used it; and that wealthy Jews used a space laser to start forest and other fires.

As a growing number of Democrats asked Minority House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy to remove the freshman Congresswoman from her committee assignments on Monday, the House Rules Committee said it would submit a resolution on Tuesday.

The resolution alleges that Green violated clause 1 of rule 23 of the Chamber, which states: “A member, delegate, resident commissioner, officer or employee of the Chamber must at all times behave in a manner that reflects with credit in the Chamber.”

In a statement sent to Newsweek in MondayGreene said that Democrats and “Fake News Media” are “after it” because it is “a threat to the goal of socialism” and represents “the people, not the politicians”. She never publicly rejected any of her previously stated beliefs in the conspiracy theories mentioned.

Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy said he plans to meet with Greene to discuss his extremist beliefs.

“These comments are deeply disturbing and leader McCarthy plans to have a conversation with Congresswoman about them,” Mark Bednar, McCarthy’s spokesman, told Axios last week.

Newsweek contacted McConnell’s office for comment.
