In an extraordinary press release, the Mississippi State Department of Health acknowledged on Wednesday afternoon that it has no COVID-19 vaccine to offer and cannot make appointments.
“We now believe that our manufacturing is predictable enough.”
The announcement came a day after Governor Tate Reeves announced that he was opening vaccines for a broader population – everyone aged 65 and over or with pre-existing illnesses. The governor said he would like to receive “shots in the arms” from the largest number of Mississippi residents as soon as possible, promising to vaccinate first aid and teachers soon next week.
The MSDH indicates that vaccinating the general population, and even those 75 and older who were already in line for injections, will not be possible now. The statement reflects Wednesday’s unavailability through the hotline and website of MSDH and three hospitals in Costa.

The press release says:
“The Mississippi State Department of Health expects to receive a large load of vaccine in mid-February, which should help put additional vaccines in people’s arms. We understand the frustration caused by this sudden change of plans. We will certainly keep all Mississippi residents up to date on additional vaccines.
“Mississippi people must understand that we can only vaccinate residents based on the availability of the vaccine. We will open additional vaccination appointments as we receive more vaccine.
“Again, the schedule has been incredibly changed to make it impossible to vaccinate all those eligible.
