Missing cockatoo located near the Tracy aviary

SALT LAKE CITY – A black, red-tailed cockatoo that escaped from Tracy’s aviary on Friday was located nearby Saturday morning.

A spokesman for the aviary said the cockatoo, called Matilda, was “flying with his keeper when it was caught by a gust of wind and blew up” from the property on Friday afternoon at about 3 pm. Thanks to a tip from neighbors, Matilda was located on Saturday just one block from the aviary.

“Thank you very much to our community for your support and kind words during this stressful period,” wrote the aviary on Facebook, adding that its employees had a “long night” looking for the bird.

UPDATE! MATILDA HAS BEEN FOUND! It was a long night for everyone involved – it’s nap time! We are happy to leave …

This is not the first time that Aviary Tracy has had to fight the renegade cockatoo. Matilda also escaped from the aviary in January 2020, only to be found safe in a nearby Liberty Park tree.

Matilda escaped for the first time in 2013, when she was less than a year old, and did not recover for three days.
