Mirrorless Nikon Z 9 flagship camera officially confirmed for 2021: new sensor, 8K video

We knew a flagship Nikon mirrorless camera would probably arrive at some point, but tonight, the company officially confirmed its development and launch scheduled for later this year. They also confirmed some details about the next camera and released an image of the body.

The flagship mirrorless camera, which will be known as the Z 9, was officially confirmed this evening by Nikon. The Z 9 will have a built-in vertical handle, as seen in the image above (although the final design of the body may change). The body will feature a new stacked CMOS sensor, new image processing engine and 8K video recording, along with other advanced video features. The company calls the Z 9 “a significant advance in technology and performance to provide users with an unprecedented imaging experience and fulfill diverse workflows.”

Although this is all the information we have at the moment, the company has promised to release more information as the launch date approaches. I would expect the Z 9 to probably be tested at this summer’s Olympics (along with the Canon R1). Although we don’t have as much information yet, it seems that Nikon intends to go toe-to-toe with Canon and Sony with the Z 9. It looks like this year will be very exciting!
