Mindy Kaling set to voice Scooby Doo’s Velma Dinkley in the next Velma animated series for HBO Max

Mindy Kaling has already worked hard on the long-awaited third episode of Legally Blonde.

But the 41-year-old actress added another project to her plate by defining the voice of Scooby Doo’s Velma Dinkley in an adult animated series for HBO Max.

The standalone series, titled Velma, will serve as the ‘origin story’ for the brainiac designated by the Mystery Inc. gang, according to Variety.

In addition to giving voice to the main character of the series, Kaling will also be the executive producer of Velma, alongside Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register.

Velma received a 10-episode order from HBO Max, but the official release date for the animated series has yet to be revealed.

Since it first aired in 1969, the Scooby Doo franchise has produced numerous animated series, as well as several iterations of live action.

“It is a tremendous privilege to build on the cartoon legacy of more than 100 years in this company,” said Suzanna Makkos, executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation at HBO Max, as the network announced its expansion of adult animation on Wednesday -market.

HBO Max subscribers will also have the opportunity to restart Clone High, which received an optimistic two-season order for the streaming platform, while choosing the new Fired on Mars series featuring SNL’s Pete Davidson vocal talents.

Kaling, best known for her behind-the-scenes work on NBC’s The Office, is also writing the script for Legally Blonde 3 with her fellow actress and friend Reese Witherspoon.

The Ocean 8 star said in a recent interview with Access Hollywood that it was ‘a lot of fun to imagine’ Witherspoon’s iconic character, Elle Woods, at 40.

‘I love the franchise very much. I love Elle Woods as a character. And when Reese [Witherspoon] asked me if I wanted to write it, I said, “For sure!” remembered Kaling.

‘I can’t wait to see what people think about the way we write Elle Woods at 40. How Elle Woods is at 40 compared to when I was 21 was really fun to imagine.’

Legally Blonde 3’s plans were confirmed last May, with Kaling and Parks and Recreation writer Dan Goor signing to write a new script for the beloved comedy.

Teasing the project, Mindy said TODAY in October that dealing with a Legally Blonde script was a ‘really scary’ task for her ‘because it’s such an iconic film.’

She added that ‘what made him more attractive was the fact that [Elle is] now 20 years older. ‘

So, what’s the 42-year-old version of Elle Woods like? How is she? Is she so cheerful? Did life bring you down in any way? Has she become cynical? Or is she exactly the same? ‘

‘For me, I thought that making her that age and having her go through the same kinds of things that I went through when I was 40, made it all fun.’

The first film Legally Blonde opened in theaters in July 2001, with a sequel entitled Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.
