Milwaukee County Postcode Vaccination Program Starts Monday

Starting on Monday morning, March 22, the Milwaukee County postal code vaccination program begins. Local officials say it is a big step towards equal access to the vaccine.

Registration through the county vaccination post at the Kosciuszko Community Center has begun, but that is not your only option. At 10 am on Monday, two locations are opening in Milwaukee – North Division High School and South Division High School – where no appointment is required.

“This is a new chapter,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “We hadn’t done walking clinics before.”

Milwaukee County residents in 10 zip codes can roll up their sleeves and receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The only other requirement is age.

“In these postal codes, all individuals aged 16 and over, if they receive Pfizer, and 18 years or older for other vaccines, will be eligible for vaccination,” said Barrett.

The zip codes chosen are some of the most underserved and have the highest rating on the Social Vulnerability Index of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, although officials say these neighborhoods have some of the lowest vaccination rates.

“My heart felt joy. This is a major victory for health equity in the state,” said Dr. Jasmine Zapata, a public health doctor and pediatrician at UW Health.

Zapata is a native of Milwaukee and grew up in three of the eligible postal codes.

“From a health professional who is within the walls of the hospital and also in Milwaukee, I ask that everyone consider this,” said Zapata.

She is asking the public to do their best for health.

“Shooting is very safe and effective, and it is an important tool in our toolbox to overcome this,” said Zapata.

Community leaders on Sunday expressed the importance of increasing access and simplifying the process.

“It is critical that we bring our underrepresented communities to these locations,” said Milwaukee advisor JoCasta Zamarripa.

They expressed the importance of increasing access – and simplifying the process.

“It shows that they care,” said 20-year-old Maribel Dorantes.

Dorantes, who lives in one of the priority CEPs, said that this is a positive step.

“We need our health safely,” said Dorantes.
