Miley Cyrus reveals that the transition from the role of teenager to music has led to an ‘identity crisis’

Miley Cyrus revealed how playing Hannah Montana led to an identity crisis early in her career.

The 28-year-old musician and actress said that starring as the iconic protagonist of the Disney Channel series, which aired for the first time in 2006, made it difficult for her to find out who she really was.

Speaking on Spotify’s Rock This podcast with Allison Hagendorf, she said: ‘The concept of the show is that when you are this character, when you have this alter ego, you are valuable.

‘You have millions of fans, you are the biggest star in the world.

‘So the concept was that when I looked like myself, when I was no longer wearing the wig, nobody cared about me. I was no longer a star. ‘

She added: ‘It was pierced in my head that, other than Hannah Montana, nobody cares about you. That was the concept. I really had to break this. ‘

Since the popular show ended in 2011, Miley admitted that she went through an identity crisis when she had to transition from playing a character ‘almost as often as myself’.

Referring to the 2013 Bangerz album, she explained: ‘I think that is perhaps why I sometimes almost created a featured version of myself.

‘I never created a character where it wasn’t me, but I was aware of how people saw me and I kind of played with it a little bit.

‘Like, when I realized that people said I would stick my tongue out, when they said,’ Stop putting your fucking tongue out, ‘I would do more.

“When people are upset, it means they care, so it makes you want to do that too.”

The popular show followed Miley Stewart, an ordinary teenager, who lived a double life as a famous pop singer named Hannah Montana.
