The Titans made only 19 bags last season. Somehow, the team promises to improve its pass rush.
Hiring JJ Watt would be a good start.
Titans coach Mike Vrabel has been on the Texans defensive team for four seasons, the first three as a linebacker coach and then as a defensive coordinator in 2017. In all respects, Watt liked Vrabel and Vrabel liked Watt.
Titans general manager Jon Robinson confirmed earlier this week that the team had contact with Watt.
Vrabel was asked on Thursday night about the risk versus the reward of signing with Watt.
“When you join a free agency, there are a lot of things about acquiring players that involve: what is best for your football team?” Vrabel said, via Jim Wyatt from the team’s website. “The cost is also part of that. Adjustment is part of that, and then the need. . . . You mentioned JJ Watt, and there will be other veteran players available to discuss, and JJ Watt. . . . There are many things necessary to hire free agents, certainly those who are past 30 or are in the middle of their careers. These are all the things that you undertake and determine. “
Vrabel said the Titans could deal with edge defenders in the free agency and in the draft. They should. They need more help than a player would bring, even Watt.
