Forget concrete and steel – Mighty Buildings is using robots and 3D printers to build a $ 15 million home community in California.

Mighty Buildings, a construction technology company, specializes in 3D printed residences of various sizes, presenting a cutting edge technological solution that can solve issues such as the real estate crisis and sustainability. And so far, that formula has found the company’s success: last month, Mighty Buildings raised $ 40 million in a Series B round.

The California-based company is not the first or the only company to take advantage of this growing 3D printing technology. But unlike other companies, the next Mighty Building project in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Will be titled “the world’s first planned community of 3D printed houses,” according to its manufacturer.

“This will be the first local update of our vision for the future of housing – capable of being implemented quickly, accessible, sustainable and capable of increasing neighboring communities with a positive dynamic,” Alexey Dubov, co-founder and COO of Powerful Buildings said in a press release.

To create this unprecedented community, Mighty Buildings partnered with the Palari Group, a working relationship that started from other property projects in September 2020.

In December last year, the Palari Group officially ordered Mighty’s “Cinco” models for the Rancho Mirage, California, housing development.

Rancho Mirage may not be Los Angeles or San Francisco, but this Southern California location has its benefits. The city – known as “the presidents’ playground”, according to Mighty Buildings – is located in the Coachella Valley, which Sam Ruben, the company’s sustainability director, calls “one of the epicenters of modern design”.

The development of technology-oriented housing will consist of 15 houses on five acres. This $ 15 million project will be built using the Mighty Kit system, which uses prefabricated panels to create custom homes.

Through this system, the concrete days are over. Instead, the houses will be based on Mighty Building’s proprietary 3D printed Light Stone Material, which defines its shape after exposure to ultraviolet light, according to the company. The printers also feature “robotic automation” and robotic arms, the latter for functions such as quality control scans, Ruben told Insider in an email interview.

Using this construction method has several advantages of sustainability, speed and cost. Similar to the prefabricated general household industry, Mighty Building’s 3D printing process allows construction companies to create units more quickly and 40% more economically, while reducing construction waste by 99%, according to Ruben.

What will the houses include?

3D printed houses will be no different from a traditional mid-century modern house traditionally built.

The 1,450-square-foot homes – which will be placed on 10,000-square-foot plots – will come with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. If there is not enough space, the houses will also have a separate 700 square foot unit, two beds and a bathroom.

Want to enjoy the California sun? The backyard will have a pool and deck, but this outdoor space can be upgraded with hot tubs, fire pits or outdoor showers.

Homes will also come with a “welfare intelligence solution” that can control aspects of life, such as air and water quality and circadian lights. According to Ruben, this integration of smart technology creates a comfortable and sustainable life experience, using only energy when needed.

Along with this ecological trend, homes will have “zero net energy”, with solar energy and optional Tesla Powerwall batteries. Electric vehicle chargers are also optional.

“The project aims to minimize its environmental impact and offer smart and healthy homes for buyers concerned with sustainability,” wrote Mighty Buildings in a press release.

Development will be completed next spring, and Mighty Buildings is already in talks with a “number of developers” for potential future communities.
