Microsoft to Sell Xbox Mini Refrigerator after Win on Twitter

A few weeks ago, the Xbox team shared an Xbox branded mini fridge that, as you can imagine, everyone wanted to buy one – myself included. Sprinkle in a Twitter poll and lots of votes later and you can buy one soon, but we don’t know all the details yet.

How it happened is that Twitter marketing was running a March MadnessThe type of support from brands that use Twitter and the finals boiled down to Xbox vs. Skittles. Both brands are popular on Twitter and so the battle began to get the most votes: it was just 1 vote per user and the brand with the most votes would win after 24 hours.

Skittles was offering to bring the lemon flavor back to green, but the Xbox was mainly using its large follower count to increase its votes, but after almost 200,000 votes, the score was even.

Because I want an Xbox mini refrigerator and, at that time, Microsoft had not publicly announced plans to bring it to market, I tweeted to Aaron Greenberg that Microsoft should react against Skittles’ offering a lime green scent with an offer to officially sell the Xbox mini-fridges if they won.

Greenberg responded a few minutes later with “challenge accepted” and not long after it made it official that Microsoft would build the mini-fridges if they won the vote.

This morning, Xbox was able to guarantee victory by a small margin of votes, but a victory is a victory, and therefore Xbox will offer refrigerators for sale at some point in the future – we don’t have a timeline for launch yet.

Now, when all this happened, I assumed that Microsoft would offer the mini-fridges for sale because of the speed with which it all came together on Twitter last night. You don’t normally commit to putting something into production without some legwork to approve it, align financing and all the other business aspects that must take place before making such an announcement, but I was wrong.

After the Xbox won the vote, Greenberg confirmed that it was my tweet (above) that made the ball roll to make it a reality. So, when you’re getting a cold drink in your next mini-fridge, think about me … or not, but either way, a fun story to share.
