The “Restart this PC” option has long offered users a quick and easy way to restore their computer to factory settings. But since the release of Windows 10 version 1607, users have complained that the feature is not working, with the message “There was a problem restarting your PC. No changes were made” being displayed.
Now Microsoft has finally solved the problem. The company released update KB4598479 as part of the first Patch Tuesday of 2021.

The patch is described as a “service stack update” and applies to Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909. The update fixes a bug that was introduced by an earlier patch. The KB4524244 update caused problems when users tried to restore their computers, and Microsoft later removed this specific update.
When it comes to the newly released KB4598479, Microsoft doesn’t provide much information about the update on its support page, simply saying:
This update makes quality improvements to the service stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Maintenance stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable maintenance stack so that your devices can receive and install updates from Microsoft.
You can get KB4598479 through Windows Update to correct the problem with the “Reset this PC” feature. If you are unable to do so for any reason, you can uninstall update KB4524244 as a workaround.
