Microsoft is testing Xbox Game Pass 1080p streaming

The 720p resolution for Xbox Game Pass cloud streaming (also known as xCloud) is decent on a phone, but this clearly won’t work when it comes to PCs and iPads. Fortunately, an increase in resolution appears to be in order. Windows Central and The Verge both say that Microsoft is testing 1080p streams. It is not certain how widespread the test is or when you will see this update, but that would be a huge increase in quality for big screen players.

A simultaneous leak from an updated Xbox game streaming application for Windows also shows how the software will accommodate more players. It will reportedly offer support for touch input and gyro (motion), making it more feasible to remotely play Xbox games on tablets like the Surface line when you don’t have a gamepad.

Both the 1080p test and the new app are ahead of schedule and it is not certain when any of them will appear. Microsoft is rumored to have a gaming event scheduled for March, but there is no guarantee that the update will be ready to be released at that time. It is easy to see Microsoft moving forward, however. Cloud games and remote play work best when you don’t have to worry about device choices or image quality – they wouldn’t be too ubiquitous after that, but they would be close enough for more people to try.
