Microsoft Flight Simulator presents real-time snow message for happy new year

The year is starting with snow in Microsoft Flight Simulator, thanks to the new real-time snow update.

Welcome to 2021. We really hope this year will start a little better than last year, as will Microsoft and Asobo Studio, makers of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

In a video message released today, the developers wished all their virtual pilots a Happy New Year and also promised to make Microsoft Flight Simulator the best platform it can be. And along with that festive message came an even more festive update that brings a certain majesty to MS Flight Simulator.

Let It Snow does exactly what it says: the effects of snow in real time are now a standard feature for flying in northern latitudes, where it is now winter. To show the new weather effects, the trailer starts with a Cessna flying through Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau, Germany. The ground is covered with fresh dust, while other scenes from around the world show a frozen winter landscape, including frozen lakes and oceans.

As with other weather effects in Microsoft Simulator, the snow weather is updated in real time based on where the player is flying. Fly over the Norwegian fjords and you will see a coastline lined with white lakes and covered with ice dotting the landscapes. Fly to the Alps and try snow-capped and powder-filled ski slopes in your aircraft’s comfortable air-conditioned cabin.

Microsoft Flight Simulator recently received support for VR to allow you to experience snowy mountains using the Oculus, Valve, HTC or Windows Mixed Reality headphones. In addition, the developers revealed a number of interesting facts about Microsoft Flight Simulator, including that the game just passed 2 million users who flew with 50 million separate flight plans.

MS Flight Simulator is now available for PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. A console version is planned sometime later in 2021, including the Xbox Series X.
