Microsoft Edge 89 brings vertical guides and new history display

Microsoft has officially released version 89 of its popular Chromium-based Edge browser, bringing its long-tried vertical guide feature for the first time.

Vertical guides are intended to make more efficient use of screen space and should be a welcome addition for users browsing 16: 9 monitors in particular. Users can click on the vertical guides to switch between them and optionally group related guides together.

“To make managing and organizing guides easier, vertical guides are now generally available this month,” said Microsoft corporate vice president Liat Ben-Zur on a company blog. “Now everyone can view and manage their tabs in a side panel with a single click. This allows you to clearly see the tab titles and controls, making it easier to find and switch between the tabs you need, no matter how many you open. . “

Edge users can switch between horizontal and vertical guides by clicking on the new “Enable / disable vertical guides” icon at the left end of the guide line. By default, vertical tabs are displayed as icons, unless passed with the mouse pointer, but the expanded panel can also be pinned to the left side of the browser window so that the title of each page remains visible.

In addition to vertical guides, Edge now includes a new way to view your browsing history. Now, when users go to history, it opens as a light drop-down menu on the toolbar, instead of opening the full page view in the settings. The idea is to allow users to easily search, open and manage their history without navigating outside. For users who prefer the original style, this drop-down list can also be attached to the right side of the browser window as a panel.

Microsoft Edge has won over many users with its frequent feature updates and the tight integration of Microsoft’s design language with the macOS design signature. The last major update came in January and introduced several new features, including “sleep guides” that free up system resources, a password generator and monitor, new visual themes and more.

The browser can be downloaded from the Microsoft Edge website.
