Michigan reported 2,048 new cases of coronavirus and 27 new deaths on Tuesday, March 16.
Of the 27 deaths reported on Tuesday, six occurred outside the past 24 hours and were identified during a review of vital records. These reviews take place three times a week.
Almost all Michigan counties reported new cases, with the exception of Keweenaw and Luce. Wayne County led in new cases (354) and deaths (four).
Oakland County added 269 new cases, while Macomb added 252. Other counties with significant new case counts included Genesee with 78, Kent with 76, St. Clair with 73, Kalamazoo with 69, Ingham with 67, Ottawa with 59 and Washtenaw with 54 .
Nineteen counties reported at least one death, with Oakland, Genesee, Ingham, Monroe and Chippewa reporting two each. Counties with a single new death included Macomb, Kent, St. Clair, Kalamazoo, Ottawa, Calhoun, Wexford, Eaton, Lapeer, Berrien, Newaygo, Roscommon and Menominee.
Of the 20,919 diagnostic tests processed on Monday, 8.6% tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. It was the highest one-day rate since January 7.
The rate of positivity has been increasing since March 10, when 4.5% of the 45,901 diagnostic tests were positive. However, the diagnostic tests processed per day declined from the 48,343 tests processed on March 11.

The state has an average of 1,951 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 new deaths per day in the past week. This is the highest weekly average of cases since January 20.
Since the start of the pandemic, Michigan has reported 612,628 confirmed cases and 15,810 deaths due to COVID-19. In addition, the state reported 63,866 probable cases and 995 probable deaths, in which a physician and / or antigen test considered COVID-19, but no confirmatory CRP test was performed.

Hospitals across the state were treating 1,103 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including 273 patients in the ICU. This number has been higher since last Tuesday, March 9, when hospitals were treating 937 of these patients, 217 in the ICU.
As of Sunday, Michigan had administered more than 3.08 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. This includes about 1.98 million first doses and 1.1 million second doses. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines recommend two doses given weeks apart, while the Johnson & Johnson vaccine only needs one injection.

The next graph below shows new cases in the last 30 days based on the onset of symptoms. In this graph, the numbers for the most recent days are incomplete due to the time interval between people getting sick and getting a result of the confirmed coronavirus test, which can take up to a week or more.
