Michigan Wolverines QB Joe Milton enters the NCAA transfer portal

Michigan quarterback Joe Milton entered his name on the transfer portal on Thursday. The third year quarterback will have three years of remaining eligibility, as the NCAA has granted an extra year of eligibility and Milton has not yet used his redshirt season.

Milton was an ESPN 300 contender in the 2018 class, described as raw and in need of time to develop, and played four games in his first season.

After playing four games in 2019, Milton was elected as the starter to open the 2020 season. He helped lead Michigan to victory against Minnesota at the opening, completing 15 of 22 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown.

He shot for 644 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the next two games, both defeats, against Michigan State and Indiana. He was eventually replaced by Cade McNamara, who started the final two games of the season for Michigan.

Michigan made changes to its coaching staff this off-season that would affect the position, separating from center back coach Ben McDaniels. Coach Jim Harbaugh is now planning to work with the quarterbacks and has also hired running back coach Mike Hart and Ron Bellamy to train the wide receivers.

The Wolverines will still have McNamara on the list and added ESPN 300 quarterback JJ McCarthy in this 2021 cycle. McCarthy is the 25th overall recruit and the second double threat quarterback.

Milton is transferring as a graduate student and will be immediately eligible for the program of his choice.
