Michigan virus numbers look better

Michigan’s rate of new COVID-19 cases has been dropping for more than 29 days, a state scientist said on Wednesday.

“It will be important during this holiday season, too, and on New Year’s Eve, to ensure that we are maintaining this social distance. This will be very important, ”said Sarah Lyon-Callo, head of the epidemiology department.

“We will be looking at this data during the holiday season to determine whether we are going to see any resurgence of cases,” said Lyon-Callo.

The state reported last week the lowest total new weekly cases, 28,072, since the end of October.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer responded by banning dinner in closed restaurants, in-person high school classes and other business restrictions. The dinner ban remains in effect until January 15.

“We hope that the Michiganders will do what we did on Thanksgiving Day, don’t travel so much, don’t gather so much, don’t contribute to the spread so much,” said Whitmer. “And if that’s the case, we could take more aggressive steps to engage again right after the first day of the year.”

Meanwhile, the health department said more than 231,000 doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines were delivered to local health departments and hospitals. More than 120,000 additional doses are expected in the next week.
