Michigan student accidentally fires a homemade bomb

Six people were injured when a Michigan student accidentally fired a homemade explosive device inside a classroom on Monday morning.

The 16-year-old student who detonated the device, four other students and a teacher were injured in the inadvertent explosion at Newaygo High School, police told MLive.com.

The police did not immediately reveal what the explosive was made for or why the student brought it to school.

But the blast “was not an attack or intended to be malicious, but a serious lack of judgment,” said Newaygo schools superintendent Peggy Mathis.

“It wasn’t someone planting an explosive device to hurt our students. Those directly involved with the situation determined that this was not the intention, ”said Mathis.

The explosion caused all other schools in Newaygo County to be blocked for a brief period, the report said.
