Michigan reported 4,454 new cases of coronavirus and 16 additional deaths on Wednesday, March 24.

The state has an average of 3,122 new cases of COVID-19 per day and 18 new deaths per day in the past week. This marks 13 consecutive days of increase in the case average.

This is the first time that the state has recorded an average of more than 3,000 cases since January 12 and the highest one-day average since registering 3,126 on January 12.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Michigan has reported 637,645 confirmed cases and 15,935 COVID-19-related deaths. In addition, the state reported 68,905 probable cases and 1,014 probable deaths, in which a physician and / or antigen test considered COVID-19, but no confirmatory CRP test was performed.

Eighty of Michigan’s 83 counties reported new cases on Wednesday. Wayne County led in new cases with 708, with the next closest being Macomb with 626 and Oakland with 560. Other counties with important reports included Kent with 271, Genesee with 174, St. Clair with 166, Ingham with 155, Jackson with 141, Ottawa with 138 and Kalamazoo with 129.

Thirteen counties reported new deaths, with Wayne reporting three others. County Wexford reported two, while Oakland, Kent, Genesee, Ingham, Kalamazoo, Washtenaw, Grand Traverse, Calhoun, Montcalm, Roscommon and Menominee reported one.

Hospitals across the state were treating 1,729 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 375 patients in the ICU. These totals represent a jump of 1,103 hospitalizations and 273 in the ICU last Wednesday, March 17th.

Of the 33,523 diagnostic tests processed on Wednesday, 11.31% tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The average rate of positivity in the last seven days is 9.23%.

Case report

The next graph below shows new cases in the last 30 days based on the onset of symptoms. In this graph, the numbers for the most recent days are incomplete due to the time lag between people getting sick and getting the result of the confirmed coronavirus test, which can take up to a week or more.
