A Michigan high school was shattered after a student’s homemade explosive device was accidentally detonated on Monday.

Newaygo Police Department officers were dispatched to Newaygo High School at 8:52 am for an explosion inside a classroom, said the Michigan State Division of the Michigan State Police in a statement. Twitter topic.
A preliminary police investigation determined that a 16-year-old student accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device he brought to school. The explosion injured the student and four other classmates.
Newaygo High School administration officials immediately called 911 and evacuated the school, transferring students to a bus garage when emergency personnel arrived on the scene. All schools in the county were temporarily closed as part of the county’s emegerncy operations plan until the police determined that there were no more threats to students.
The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital for moderate to severe injuries, while four others went to the hospital for his minor injuries. The classroom teacher also sought care at the hospital.

Newaygo Public Schools superintendent Peg Mathis said the 16-year-old showed “a serious lack of judgment”.
“It wasn’t about someone planting an explosive device to hurt our students,” said Mathis in a Facebook post.
She added that students would be sent home during the day due to the “smell and smoke at school”.
Newaygo County Emergency Services told parents to go to the bus garage on 70 East Street to pick up their children, but that K-8 students would stay at school as usual during the day and be released during normal hours.

Michigan State Police noted that an investigation into “what type of material was involved in the explosion and the circumstances that contributed” is still ongoing.
The FBI and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrived at the scene to help identify the explosive materials involved. The incident is being investigated by the Newaygo Police Department and the Michigan State Police Hart Post, with full assistance from Newaygo Public School staff.
In a 17:42 update, Michigan State Police said soldiers were executing a search warrant for a Newaygo County residence according to the investigation.
