Michigan coronavirus cases up to 642,869; Death toll now at 15,984

The number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Michigan increased to 642,869 on Thursday, including 15,984 deaths, state officials reported.

Thursday’s update includes a total of 5,224 new cases and 49 additional deaths, including 30 from a review of Vital Records. On Wednesday, the state recorded 637,645 cases in total and 15,935 deaths. It is the highest total for a day in 2021 and the highest since December 11, 2020.

The tests have been stable at around 35,000 diagnostic tests reported per day on average, with the positive 7-day rate above 9% on Wednesday. The state has reported an increase in hospitalizations in the past three weeks.

Michigan’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 3,493 on Thursday – the highest since early January. The average 7-day mortality rate was 22 on Thursday and has been stable for several weeks. The state’s mortality rate is 2.5%. The state also reports “active cases”, which were listed at 64,200 on Thursday. More than 562,000 have recovered in Michigan.

Michigan reported more than 3.8 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered, until Wednesday, with 29.6% of residents having received at least one dose.

Worldwide, more than 124.9 million people were confirmed infected and more than 2.7 million died. More than 70 million recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University. The real numbers are certainly much higher, due to limited testing, the different ways in which nations count the dead and the deliberate underreporting of some governments.
