Michigan coach Juwan Howard was sent off during a close battle with Maryland

Michigan college basketball coach Juwan Howard was sent off during a break in the second half of his 79-66 victory over Maryland.

During a break from the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game, Howard was seen gesturing towards the Maryland bench. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon seemed to respond and started a skirmish where Howard attacked the opposing team and needed to be restrained by his coaching staff and players.

According to the Detroit Free Press, as soon as Howard knew he could be kicked out of the game, he was even more irritated. He was then sent off and Turgeon received a technical foul.

At a press conference after the game, Howard said he was trying to discuss a connection with the judge, but claimed that Turgeon told him, “Juwan, I won’t let you talk to me! You don’t talk to me ever again! Howard said that Turgeon then charged against him.

“I was raised by Grandma and Chicago,” said Howard. “When a guy attacks you, you go into defense mode … When he attacks me, I reacted.”

Assistant coach Phil Martelli took over from Howard, and Michigan came to victory after losing in double figures in the first half of the game. They will face the winner of Ohio State vs. Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday.
