Michigan baby shower participant dies after cannon blast

A 26-year-old man died of injuries from a defective cannon at a Michigan baby shower on Saturday, a report said.

Evan Silva was hit by metal splinters when the cannon – intended to commemorate the occasion – exploded at the house in Gaines Township at around 7:30 pm, MLive.com reported, citing state police.

Silva, who was standing about 3 meters from the device, was the only participant in the baby shower hit by the splinter.

He was taken to a hospital in Flint but could not be saved, the report said.

Investigators suspect that the powder loaded in the cannon made it explode.

When fired successfully, the cannon, which was bought at auction by the home owner, produces a bright flash and a loud bang, the report said.

The owner of the house fired several times before Saturday.
