Michael Comfort provides minimal updates on the potential extension of the contract

Today we discovered two very important pieces of information; um, Michael Comfort is
rooting for Tom Brady and the Buccaneers at this year’s Super Bowl, and two, there has been no talk of extension between the Mets and the all-star outfielder, yet.

On a call Tuesday night, Conforto noticed that he had not spoken to Sandy Alderson or the Mets since November, and even then the conversation did not revolve around a possible extension. However, he added that he hopes the discussions will progress soon.

“I don’t want this to go on for the season,” he said in a call to the Thurman Munson Dinner tonight, reported first by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. This means that any extension discussions would preferably take place before or during spring training.

Conforto, a local talent, has been an effective external defender of the Mets since he emerged in 2015. In 2017, he won his first and only candidacy for the National League’s All-Star team, a year in which he made 27 home runs and hit 68 RBIs. He hasn’t slowed down since, hitting at least 25 home runs in each of the next two seasons, before putting 31 RBIs on a .322 batting average during the shortened campaign for the 2020 pandemic.

Comfort also spoke about the possible signing of Mets for the National League 2020 Cy Young award winner Trevor Bauer, who, as the best free agent holder in the market, has been a hot topic in the league for months.

“If you’re asking me if we want pitches, of course we want pitches. I think that’s the short answer, “he said, per Tim Healey, Mets special editor for Newsday. “We feel like we hit the ball really well last year, so whenever you’re talking about bringing the best pitcher on the market, that’s always a good thing,” he added, as reported by the New York Post reporter Mike Puma.

Many online fans have speculated that any Bauer signing could put Mets, who is already sitting in a payroll nearly $ 200 million, in a position in which they struggle to forgo key pieces like Comfort, pitcher Noah Syndergaard or newly acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor, all of them free agents after the 2021 season.

However, only time will tell, and in the meantime, Comfort will receive yet another award. This time, it is a Thurman Munson award, which honors a player “for the success and inspiration on the playing fields and community spirit outside the field”,
according for DiComo.
