MIAMI – Miami Mayor Francis Suarez wants to reserve doses of the COVID-19 vaccine only for those who live within the city limits under a policy he calls “Miami First”.

He presented the idea at a city commission meeting on Thursday.

Federal regulations say there can be no residency requirements for the vaccine. But Suarez asked the city administrator and the prosecutor to “take all necessary legal measures” to prevent non-residents from receiving vaccines before the city’s elderly and vulnerable populations.

Plans are underway to open a vaccination station as early as Wednesday in Miami’s Marlins Park.
