Miami Dolphins part ways with OC Chan Gailey, the source said

The Miami Dolphins parted ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This marks the second consecutive season that coach Brian Flores fired his offensive coordinator. Flores, who ended his second season as a coach in 2020, fired Chad O’Shea at the end of the 2019 season.

Gailey was tasked with making Tua Tagovailoa the fifth overall choice in the franchise’s quarterback. Tagovailoa ended his debut season by completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,814 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.

In Sunday’s 56-26 loss to Buffalo Bills, in which Miami would have qualified for the playoffs with a win, Tagovailoa threw three interceptions, including a pick-six, while rolling for 361 yards and a touchdown.

The Dolphins started the season with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick as a starter, but Tagovailoa took over in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams. Fitzpatrick replaced Tagovailoa twice during the season, including Week 16, when he brought the Dolphins together for a miraculous comeback victory.

But Fitzpatrick was not available at Week 17 after the positive test for COVID-19.

Gailey was familiar with Fitzpatrick, having previously trained him with the Bills and the New York Jets. Fitzpatrick finished this season completing the best career performance in 68.5% of his passes for 2,091 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Overall, the Dolphins ended the 2020 season in 22nd place in the total attack.
