Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) is now ready to make a film telling the week-long story of a group of retail investors from the social media platform Reddit who faced the financial power of Wall Street.
According to a report by Deadline on Sunday, MGM acquired the rights to the film for a book proposal known as “The Antisocial Network” on Friday from New York Times bestselling author Ben Mezrich.
Winklevoss Pictures, founded by bitcoin entrepreneurs and billionaires Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, will executive produce the film, according to the report. Aaron Ryder – who produced “Arrival” and “Donnie Darko”, among others – was selected to produce the new film after signing an initial contract with MGM.
The story revolves around Reddit’s WallStreetBets group and its effort to bring down large hedge funds, forcing a little pressure on stocks like GameStop (GME), Nokia (NOK) and AMC Entertainment (AMC), among others.
Mezrich will once again work with MGM producer Michael DeLuca, having collaborated on “The Social Network” – a story about Facebook’s rise to prominence adapted from a previous Mezrich novel.
In the meantime, publishers are expected to auction the book this month.
