Is there anything as idealized as life in a small town? For many people, white picket fences, friendly neighbors and the main street lined with quaint family shops paint the perfect picture of the American Dream. But in reality, small towns are not immune to problems; in fact, some are as threatening as the larger cities. To find out which one in particular you should be aware of, we analyzed the numbers to discover the most dangerous small city in America. First, let’s clarify what we mean by “small town”. To begin with, we focused our analysis on towns and small towns with populations ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 residents. We then narrowed the list down to the top 25 in the 100 cities with the highest rates of violent crime (as recorded by the FBI and compiled by News +), which was the most important factor in our Danger Index. From there, we used the FBI’s data for crimes against property per capita, as well as the pedestrian death rate by congressional district (as compiled by Smart Growth America’s report of the most dangerous districts of 2019). Finally, we consider the unemployment rate by constituency, according to the US Census Bureau, considering that research has shown that a 1% change in the unemployment rate tends to increase property crimes by up to 2%. Then, we gave each metric a weighted value before running it through our unique algorithm to see how each small town scored on our 100-point scale Hazard Index. In general, the most dangerous small towns were located predominantly in the Sun Belt and the Midwest. And while looking at cities with up to 100,000 inhabitants, the largest city on our list had 74,330 inhabitants; most were much smaller, with 30,000 or fewer residents.
