Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador tests positive for Covid-19

The president, who tweeted from his official Twitter account, said his symptoms were mild and that he was receiving medical treatment.

“I am sorry to inform you that I contracted Covid-19. The symptoms are mild, but I am already receiving medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We will move on, ”wrote Lopez Obrador.

The president added that he will continue his duties at the Presidential Palace, which include making a planned phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the topic of the Sputnik V vaccine in Russia on Monday.

“I will be conducting all public affairs at the National Palace. For example, tomorrow I will take a call from President Vladimir Putin, because regardless of friendly relationships, there is a possibility that they will send us the vaccine against Sputnik V, ”Lopez Obrador said on Twitter.

He added that the Secretary of the Interior, Dr. Olga Sanchez Cordero, will represent him at the daily meetings in the morning.

Mexico is one of the 17 countries in the world that has reported more than 1 million cases of Covid-19. Recently confirmed cases and deaths have steadily increased across the country since the beginning of October, with recent daily figures being some of the highest since the pandemic began.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico recorded at least 1,752,347 cases of Covid-19 and 149,084 people died of the virus in the country.

In the hardest hit Mexico City, almost 30 public hospitals report that they have reached 100% capacity, and many others are approaching that mark. The city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, asked residents not to leave unless absolutely necessary.
In December, Mexico City and the state of Mexico were placed at the “red level”, the highest measure in the country’s traffic light warning system for Covid-19 restrictions. The stricter measures included closing internal restaurants, with only essential sectors such as transportation, energy, health and construction remaining open.
Lopez Obrador, who rarely wears a mask, has faced much criticism for his way of dealing with the pandemic.
Mexico has one of the lowest test rates of any major country in the world, and tests are often expensive and difficult to obtain.
