Sandy Alderson’s plan on returning to the Mets was to oversee the entire organization, with a baseball operations president and general manager below him.
Then he became Alderson and just a GM.
On Tuesday, it became Sandy Alderson’s show entirely.
Following the resignation of GM Jared Porter – he was fired after ESPN reported that he sent obscene text messages to a journalist in 2016 – Alderson indicated that he has no immediate plans to fill the position. This will leave Alderson running the front office, with a sort of GM per committee.
The main players are Assistant GM Zack Scott, Senior Strategy Officer John Ricco, Vice President of Amateur and International Scouts Tommy Tanous, Chief Professional Scouts Bryn Alderson and Senior Director of Baseball Operations Ian Levin. In addition, Ben Zauzmer was recently hired by the Dodgers to oversee research and development. Joe Lefkowitz, research and development manager, also attends Zoom’s daily meetings.
Scott, a former Red Sox executive, was a candidate for Porter for the position of GM. Its strength is in the analysis.
“One of the things we will be missing is the same variety of contacts and information that we get through Jared,” said Alderson. “Jared has a lot of contacts in the game – not just at the GM level, but at the GM assistant level and below. This is a rich source of information and can lead to smaller businesses that fill our list. This is an area that we will have to address. “
Alderson’s involvement up to this point came in the larger transactions, highlighted by the trade that earned Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland.
“My attention to the baseball side will increase a little and we will see how things develop,” said Alderson. “One of the things that made me happy was how the front office team was developing as a group, led by Jared.
“Jared was energetic, knowledgeable and I was very happy with the direction I was taking. This is a secondary consequence in this situation, but I will be a little more involved, but I have a lot of faith in our group and I am sure that they will be able to perform ”.
