Mets agrees to sign Kevin Pillar

The Mets reached an agreement with outside defender Kevin Pillar, 32, on a one-year contract, according to Anthony DiComo.

In the shortened 2020 season, Pillar hit 0.288 / 0.336 / 0.462 with six home runs, five stolen bases and a 108 wRC + in 223 plate appearances for the Red Sox and Rockies. It was his best season as a hitter and, combined with his game on the field, was worth 1.1 fWAR.

Throughout his career, Pillar reached 0.262 / .299 / .408 with an 87 wRC +, having built much of his reputation in his defense. For what it’s worth, their DRS and UZR / 150 have consistently changed from positive to consistency over the past few seasons in the central field.

A right-handed hitter, Pillar has a .286 / .320 / .464 line with a 107 wRC + against left-handed pitchers. Considering the Mets left-handed batting collection that would likely spend some time in the outfield, Pillar could be a good option.
