The Mets made another update in its foreign field, agreeing to a one-year contract with free agent Kevin Pillar on Monday, confirmed Mike Puma of the Post.
The exact terms of the deal were not immediately known.
The 32-year-old gives Mets a third option in the center, along with Brandon Nimmo and Albert Almora Jr. He can also provide some flexibility on the left field, where Dom Smith is likely to start.
Pilar hitting with the right came back after seven seasons with the Blue Jays. He reached 0.308 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and 0.801 OPS in 24 games to close 2020 with the Rocky Mountains. Pillar started last season with the Red Sox, for whom he reached 0.274 in 30 games.
The Mets, who lost prize-free player George Springer, have been looking to improve their outfield this season. Although Pillar played mainly in the center, he is not the same player he was at the beginning of his career. But he can also serve as a defensive substitute for Smith on the left. He can also start against lefties, against whom he has a 0.298 / 0.332 / 0.538 cut-off line in the past two years.
