Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday unpacked its new 2022 EQA 250 crossover, the automaker’s latest electric vehicle in its plan to unleash a flood of new EVs in the near future.

EQA and its older brother, EQC, will rival Tesla’s Model Y in the crucial, fast-growing compact crossover segment.

The launch of the miniature crossover comes as Tesla is racing to finish its first European plant to supply the continent with about 500,000 vehicles a year.

Europe is one of the most important electric car markets, as consumers in some countries tend to be more eager to adopt EVs than buyers in the United States, and many countries have lucrative subsidies to attract potential customers. More than half of all cars sold in Norway in 2020 were battery powered.

EQA is set to hit European dealerships this spring, while EQC is destined for the US this year. EQA “is still being considered for the US market,” a Mercedes spokesman told Insider, although no decision has yet been made.

Both SUVs will join an expanding list of small electric crossovers that will hit the market in the coming years, coming from brands like Audi, BMW, Volkswagen and Nissan.

The launch of the EQA 250 comes as legacy car makers pile up on the EV market in an effort to make their offerings more sustainable, meet increasingly stringent emissions restrictions around the world and replicate Tesla’s success.

The crossover will be just one member of the broad equalization line that Mercedes is planning for years to come. The automaker plans to launch six new EQ models – sedans and SUVs – by 2022.
