Meghan tells Oprah that it is ‘liberating’ to speak openly after leaving the royal family with Prince Harry

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, criticized the restrictions she suffered while working as a member of the British royal family and said it was “liberating” to agree to give an interview to media magnate Oprah Winfrey.

In the most recent clip before the long-awaited interview, Winfrey said she first approached Meghan for a meeting before her wedding in May 2018 to Prince Harry. But Meghan declined, saying “maybe there is another time.”

Asked what was “right” at this point to speak, Meghan said: “Well, so many things”, adding that the couple was “on the other side of many … many life experiences that have happened”.

“We have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said yes to you then,” said Meghan in the nearly 2-minute stretch of the interview, which airs on CBS on Sunday night. “That was not my choice to make.”

“As an adult who has lived a really independent life, entering this construction that is … different from what I think people imagine it to be, it is really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege of some ways of being able to say yes “she added.

The clip was released a day after another 30-second stretch of the program saw Meghan accusing the royal family of “perpetuating falsehoods” about the couple.

Buckingham Palace did not comment on any of the most recent preview clips.

The palace said on Wednesday it would conduct an internal investigation into the allegations of bullying against Meghan published by a UK newspaper.

“We are clearly very concerned about the allegations,” said the palace statement, referring to the report in The Times, which cited unidentified sources and contains details not independently verified by NBC News.

Responding to the allegations, a spokesman for Meghan and Harry said “the Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character”.

The Sussex finalized their separation from the royal family last month, a year after “straying” from public obligations.

The couple announced on Valentine’s Day that they were expecting their second child, months after Meghan revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage.

The interview with Winfrey was announced as an opportunity for the couple to speak openly about their reasons for breaking up with the family.

“If that comes with the risk of losing things,” said Meghan in the teaser on Thursday, “I mean, there is a lot that has already been lost.”
