“The View” co-host Meghan McCain made an apology on Monday after she was called by “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver for comments she made about the rhetoric linking the outbreak. from coronavirus to China.
After last week’s deadly shootings at three massage parlors in the Atlanta area, there has been a growing push by traditional media and the Democratic Party to declare violence a hate crime because six of the eight victims were Asian Americans – despite the lack of evidence from the investigation so far.
On Sunday, Oliver joined the wave and blamed the use of the phrase “Chinese virus” by then President Donald Trump, during the 2020 election campaign, for the increased attacks on Americans of Asian origin. He then aired a clip of McCain rejecting Trump’s criticism at the time.
“I think the left wants to focus on labeling the virus on the PC. This is a great way to get Trump to be re-elected,” said McCain. “I have no problem with people calling it what they want. It is a deadly virus that originated in Wuhan. I have no problem with it.”

“Oh, good! Meghan McCain has no problem with that!” Oliver exclaimed. “Do not listen to the dozens of Asian Americans telling everyone that the term is dangerous and offensive. Instead, get together and take the word of a wealthy white woman who is dressed as if she is about to fire 47 people because of Zoom. “
The HBO star then dismissed his tweet urging others to “stop Asian hatred” by calling it “good feeling”, but emphasized that “there must be an understanding that saying, ‘I have no problem calling it a virus of China ‘is giving a lot of space for hatred to grow. “

The next day, McCain made a mea culpa, although he made no direct reference to Oliver’s comments.
“I condemn the reprehensible violence and vitriol that has been directed at the Asian American community,” she tweeted. “There is no doubt that Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric has fueled many of these attacks and I apologize for any previous comments that have helped this agenda.”
