Megaforce Records co-founder Marsha Zazula dies at 68

Marsha Zazula, co-founder of Megaforce Records, died at the age of 68.

Zazula’s passing was confirmed by his daughter, Rikki, via Facebook.

“RIP Mom April 21, 1952 – January 10, 2021,” wrote Rikki. “Your love, your strength, your memory and your music have changed lives and will continue for EVER.”

In 1983, Marsha founded Megaforce alongside her husband Jon. The label released the first two Metallica albums: Kill them all (1983) and Ride the Lightning (1984). Although the group would soon depart for a major label deal with Elektra Records, Megaforce is widely credited for launching the band’s career.

“Rest in peace, Marsha. Thanks for everything ”, says a message posted on Metallica’s official Instagram account, accompanied by a photo of the former record label executive alongside the band. “Much love to @thejonzazula and the Zazula family.”

Other artists on the Megaforce list include Anthrax, Testament, Ace Frehley, Ministry, Overkill and King’s X. The label was eventually sold to Island Records.

Variety reports that the cause of Marsha’s death was cancer. In a statement, Megaforce affirmed the former head of the label in history.

“The music world owes a debt of gratitude to Marsha Zazula, who along with her husband Jon gave birth to some of the most musically significant artists,” Megaforce tweeted. “Marsha was unique and taught the world to be fiercely independent. Megaforce and our artists will never forget it. In our hearts, it will always be a guiding force. “

Radio personality Eddie Trunk, who worked alongside Marasha at Megaforce in the 1980s, expressed similar feelings. “Marsha was unique and played a great role in the company and has always been very supportive,” Trunk Nation host wrote. “Condolences to Jon and the family.”
