Meeting between Trump and Ohio Senate candidates strained: report

Trump was fundraising to benefit Max Miller, a candidate he is supporting in an upcoming Ohio House dispute in hopes of ousting a Republican who supported his impeachment.

But he would have taken the opportunity to summon a group of candidates seeking to fill the vacancy that will remain vacant by the senator. Before dinner started, according to Politico, Trump found himself in a back room with former state treasurer Josh Mandel; former GOP state president Jane Timken; technology executive Bernie Moreno; and investment banker Mike Gibbons to discuss the race for the Senate.

Mandel and Timken have already announced their bids for the seat, while Moreno and Gibbons are expected to enter soon.

The meeting, which reportedly lasted 15 minutes, was described to the Politician by a source as being like the “Hunger Games”, and a surprise, embarrassing confrontation for the aspiring Senate.

According to sources cited by Politico, the huddle covered everything from support for Trump candidates and opposition to his impeachment, endorsements and previous donations and voting at the start of the dispute.

During the meeting, Trump noted that Timken at one point defended Rep. A source close to one of the candidates told The Hill that Trump asked Mandel why he abandoned his planned 2018 campaign against the senator. Trump mentioned Timken in his subsequent speech supporting Max Miller, the only Senate candidate who received a mention.

Sources told Politico that Mandel and Timken appeared to be trying against each other at the meeting. The Hill reached representatives of both candidates.

Trump has yet to formally endorse any candidate in the Senate race, although the reported meeting reflects how valuable his endorsement is to ambitious Republicans looking to win seats in Congress.
