UFC 257 came and went and happens when “Mystic Mac” Conor McGregor promised us a masterpiece, he was referring to one by Dustin Poirier.
Okay, actually it was just a masterpiece of violence, with McGregor taking the best of Poirier in the first round, before “Diamond” turned things around in the second to win a TKO victory (see highlights here). Other lightweights will take notes on Dustin’s performance for years, and it will be very interesting to see if McGregor can adjust his game now that there is a new plan to beat him.
And yes, McGregor will be back. He barely took a moment to feel sorry for himself in the cage, blaming the inactivity for his loss. Then he appeared at the post-fight press conference fascinated by the calf kicks that hindered him and eager to catch up with several other UFC lightweights. At this point, it is not clear whether McGregor intends to lobby for an immediate rematch with Poirier, who was heard on a successful microphone thinking about retiring after his big win. We imagine it depends on what you want to get you back to the cage soon.
“Activity” was the word McGregor continued to use, and last year he was already looking forward to fighting three times.
