House minority leader Kevin McCarthy rejects calls within the Republican Caucus to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from the party’s leadership because of his vote to impeach President Donald Trump, a McCarthy spokesman confirmed to POLITICO on Thursday -market.
Several Republican Party members demanded that Cheney be removed from her position as president of the conference after she became the highest-ranking Republican to vote on Trump’s impeachment on Wednesday. Cheney was also the second House Republican to openly endorse the impeachment for inciting insurrection, in a forceful statement she issued on Tuesday night.
“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States in office and his oath to the Constitution,” Cheney wrote in the statement, blaming Trump for inciting a crowd of protesters to destroy the Capitol last week.
