GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – Approximately 100 people attended a New Year’s Eve party in Granite Bay, despite a regional request to stay at home, a spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Sunday.
Spokeswoman Angela Musallam said MPs responded to a noise complaint at a mansion in Vista De Lago Court in the gated community of Los Lagos near Lake Folsom on Thursday night. Musallam said that no complaints were made and deputies left when the volume was reduced.
Videos circulating on social networks show that the number of people who attended the party may be much higher.
“The more these types of events occur, the longer we need to remain closed to try to limit transmissions,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg. “Events of this type are detrimental to people’s health and the economy.”
Placer County is in the Greater Sacramento region, which is under a regional order to stay home due to a drop in ICU capacity across the region, as coronavirus cases continue to increase.
The region went under the order three weeks ago, when the ICU’s capacity dropped to less than 15%, and the order should be in place for three weeks if that number increases. However, projections on Saturday prompted authorities to maintain order at the moment, as an anticipated increase resulting from the holiday is expected.
Dr. Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis, believes that the implications of the celebration can have a widespread impact.
“If there are more than 100 people there, we know that the transmission rate is relatively high, we know that at least five or 10 of them were able to transmit,” said Blumberg.
“People need to start making better choices. I personally would not have gone to a party with 10 people, ”said Rhonda Williams, a resident of Placer County.
On Monday, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg accessed Twitter to criticize the party.
“If you ask yourself why the order to stay at home is still in force and our ICUs are still under pressure, just look at the party attended by about 100 people in Granite Bay on New Year’s Eve, an event that proved evident disrespect to the sacrifices so many are making. Thanks to the vast majority of people who are doing the right thing to keep others safe. “

Sacramento’s social media influencer, Zayn Silmi, apologized on Monday for going to the party after being seen in online videos.
Despite the state’s order to stay home, some people choose to get together for the new year. So, what kind of increase can we see in the coming weeks? CBS13 is getting answers.
The state saw an increase in cases and deaths just two weeks after Thanksgiving. Based on projection models from the University of Washington, we were able to see an increase of almost 19% in cases and an almost 24% increase in deaths by January 14.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers increased three times what they are now, because people just don’t want to take it seriously, I think,” said Joey Montero.
Placer County Public Health is now advising people who went to the party or gathered on New Year’s Eve to get tested and stay home.
“It’s unfortunate because it’s going to affect a lot of people, but it is what it is and we can’t really change what happened,” said Williams.
Placer County Interim Health Officer, Dr. Rob Oldham, issued the following statement about the event:
“Public health is aware of this event. With this and any other meetings that may have occurred during the holidays, we encourage participants to take the test and stay at home and away from others as much as possible.
If an individual who attended a large meeting had a positive test and was found to be infectious during the period, contact tracking would attempt to identify a list of close contacts and notification would occur. Tracking contacts is more difficult if contacts are spread out geographically and can also be impeded by the willingness to participate, along with a high level of transmission in the community. ”
