Mayor of Broward says the health department will vaccinate about 20,000 residents a week in 8 locations

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward County Mayor Steve Geller gave a press conference Tuesday morning at the Broward Governmental Center to discuss the county health department’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts and the problems that have occurred with its website.

The Broward County Health Department currently has three open sites where seniors aged 65 and over can receive the vaccine.

The sites are only open to those who make an appointment online via browardcovidvaccine.com, however, the site has been in trouble since launching last week, leaving many people frustrated.

Geller said the collapse of the site is due to the high volume of people trying to make an appointment and that more appointments will be available as more vaccination posts are opened.

According to the mayor, the health department plans to open eight sites and will be able to vaccinate about 20,000 people a week – possibly more.

“As each new Department of Health location opens, they will reopen the Broward County website for new reservations in the first three weeks at that location,” said Geller. “In addition, the Florida Department of Health in Broward will reopen the site as they vaccinate each week, so they are always about three weeks ahead.”

Below is a list of the vaccination sites currently offered by the Broward County Department of Health:

>Tradewinds Park, 3600 West Sample Road, Coconut Creek.

>Vista View Park, Southwest 142nd Avenue, Davie.

>Markham Park, 160001 West State Road 84, Sunrise.

According to Geller, the Florida Department of Emergency Management has set up vaccination “capsules” in the following three senior community communities:

  • Century Village in Deerfield Beach
  • Kings Point in Tamarac
  • Wynmoor Village in Coconut Creek

Hundreds of people waited in line on Monday at the Tamarac location and some left early on Tuesday.

The Kings Point team told Local 10 News that things were going well on Tuesday.

“They will be going through the application process. We’ll check the symptoms, make sure there are no symptoms that prevent them from getting the vaccine today, then we’ll do a basic health check, ”said Christopher Todd, Florida Department of Health representative.

Todd said those who administer the vaccine will make the patient sit for 15 to 30 minutes after receiving the vaccine to ensure that they do not have an allergic reaction.

Geller said there is a limited number of vaccines available in each location in the community, and they are only available to residents. Each community is establishing its own procedures for administering vaccines and how to register to obtain them.

The mayor said the Broward County Health Department has already administered vaccines in all nursing homes in the area and will begin administering second doses to residents from Tuesday. Nursing home residents who missed their first dose can also receive their first dose on Tuesday.

CVS and Walgreens will administer vaccines in assisted living facilities.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is scheduled to provide an update on the Miami-Dade vaccination plan at 3 pm Tuesday.
