“I love you, dear, but your white savior complex is showing up.”
UPDATED AT 12:32 PST FROM APRIL 3, 2021
Cher offered a follow-up post after being criticized for suggesting in a tweet that she could have helped George Floyd during his tragic death.
“I struggled with this Twt, because I thought that some people would not understand, or believe that an artist could have honest emotions about a human being, suffering and dying, even if it is shown only on TV. You do not know what I have done, who I am, or what I believe in. I CAN, I HAVE and I WILL … HELP “, posted the singer.

Cher received a reaction on social media after suggesting that she could have helped George Floyd if he had been at the scene of his death in Minneapolis last May.
Accessing her Twitter on Friday night, the legendary 74-year-old singer made the statement after discussing the Derek Chauvin trial with her mother, Georgia Holt.
I was talking to mom
& She said “I watched the policeman’s trial that killed George Floyd, & cried.”
I said
“Mom, I know this is going to look crazy, but …
I kept thinking … Maybe if I had been there, … I could have helped๐– Cher (@cher) April 3, 2021

“I was talking to mom and she said, ‘I watched the trial of the cop who killed George Floyd and cried. I said,’ Mom, I know this is going to sound crazy, but … I kept thinking … Maybe if I were there, … I could have helped. “
Cher added a sad emoji face to the tweet.
Soon after, followers accessed their own Twitter to mock and admonish the singer for the tweet they labeled deaf, among other things.
“Um … Cher, I think you’re great and all, but that’s not it. George Floyd’s murder is not about you,” wrote one commentator, while another shared, “I love you, dear, but your complex white savior it’s showing. “
This is significantly underestimating what the witnesses who testified TRIED to do to prevent their death. There were MULTIPLE testimonies from everyone, from a fireman to an MMA fighter and a senior man who tried to spread the situation. Singing songs doesn’t erase racism, Cher. pic.twitter.com/oATlfe7kOw

Are you rocking Cher for tweeting that she would have liked to be there because of George Floyd? Seriously?! She’s not claiming to be a superhero like in her funny memes, it’s all about feelings of devastation and outrage. She would have liked to have helped George Floyd, like any of us.

Another said that Cher’s tweet undermined the people who actually watched the tragedy unfold and tried to help Floyd.

But others appreciated Cher’s sentiment and defended him.

Why is someone mad at Cher? Most people who have seen it think or hope that they could have helped. That is why so many witnesses cry in the testimony. If Cher uses her celebrity to help, thanks.
