While dancehall star Mavado mourned his mother’s death on Thursday night, his son Dante Brooks’s conviction of murder was postponed the next day when his son appeared before the court.
Dante Brooks, 18, and his co-accused, Andre Hinds, were found guilty of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and arson in January.
The sentencing hearing was postponed on Friday, as the defense team representing the two men was concerned by the statement of the victim’s impact.
In light of the concerns, Supreme Court Justice Minister Leighton Pusey ordered the prosecution to have more time to edit the statement in consultation with the defense.
In addition, the defense will have additional time to review the social investigation reports that have been prepared for both sentenced men.
Brooks and Smith were again held in custody until Friday, March 19, to be sentenced.
The two were accused of connection with the terrible murder of Lorenzo Thomas in the community of St Andrew de Mandioca Piece on June 5, 2018.
According to prosecutors, Brooks and Hinds were among the five men who entered a house and shot Thomas before pushing his father into another room.
Thomas’s killers would have tried to cut off his head, but they aborted the plan because the machete that was being used was not sharp enough.
They would then have poured gasoline on the house and body before setting fire to the place.
Prosecutors relied on Thomas’ father’s eyewitness testimony, which indicated that he knew his son’s killers from the community.
But while Mavado awaited his son’s sentence on Friday, news broke Thursday night that his mother, Elizabeth ‘Mrs. Pinny ‘Gordon, had died. Although her cause of death has not been disclosed, she would have died in a hospital.
On Friday, Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, shared a photo of him kissing his mother on the cheek on Instagram.
“My everything. I know I just don’t know what to say, Mom,” read the caption he wrote.
In a later Instagram post on Saturday, Mavado shared a photo of him as a baby sitting on his mother’s lap.
He then described his mother as his “best friend”, claiming in a long caption that he is now “alone”.
He said, “After you told me that you are feeling much better and that you are telling us that you are ready to go home, I feel so good when you told me that on the phone. Mom, I still can’t believe it right now.
“I am alone, I cannot trust anyone, but I have always been able to put my life in your hands since I was a child. It was always you and me walking up and down Constant Spring Road. In those days, my sister was just a baby. In those days, I always said as a child, “I’m going to buy you the biggest house and the most beautiful car when I grow up. I build you the biggest house. I keep my promise, Mom. I did it and the world will remember.” of us, you and me.
“Jah knows, I’ve never felt this way before. Wow, my best friend is gone,” the caption ended.
Well over 4,000 people responded to the tribute to their mother, with many of them sharing their condolences.
