Mattel launches Eleanor Roosevelt Barbie doll before International Women’s Day

Mattel launched a collectible Barbie inspired by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

The doll was released to the public through posts on social networks shared by verified brand accounts.

“Every big change starts with the belief that you can,” wrote Barbie’s Twitter account on Wednesday. “Barbie is proud to honor Eleanor Roosevelt as the youngest in the line of Inspiring Women. A lifelong humanitarian, she has redefined the role of women in politics and public life.”

Another tweet praised Roosevelt for his “years of service”, in which “she used her voice to elevate others and inspired generations to speak”.

Roosevelt was first lady from 1933 to 1945, while her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States.

While she was at the White House, Roosevelt was a United Nations spokesman and diplomat. She has also become a humanitarian who has fought for child welfare, housing reform and equal rights for women and racial minorities, according to Britannica.

Barbie Eleanor Roosevelt wears a floral print dress that Barbie’s exclusive designer, Carlyle Nuera, believes is a reflection of the First Lady’s style.

“She was not afraid of a bold print, which I think reflects her bold defense of the rights of different marginalized groups such as Asian Americans, black Americans and women,” said Nuera of the first documented fashion choices -lady. “And also in my research, I discovered that there is a type of iris that bears her name, a beautiful deep purple iris, which is what inspired the pattern on her dress.”

Barbie’s announcement Eleanor Roosevelt comes two days after the start of Women’s History Month. It also comes five days before International Women’s Day, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 8.

Barbie fans who want to add the historic doll to their collection will have to pay $ 29.99, excluding taxes.

According to an earlier press release, Mattel’s Inspiring Women line was launched in 2018 on International Women’s Day.

“As a brand that inspires unlimited potential in girls, Barbie will honor its largest line of models marked for International Women’s Day, because we know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” said Lisa McKnight, a vice president senior and general manager of Barbie. “Girls have always been able to play different roles and careers with Barbie and we are excited to illuminate real-life models to remind them that they can be anything.”

Other notable figures honored in Barbie’s Inspiring Women line include: American poet Maya Angelou (2021), American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald (2020), English social and statistical reformer Florence Nightingale (2020), suffragette American and women’s rights activist Susan B Anthony (2020), American tennis player, Billie Jean King (2020), American civil rights leader Rosa Parks (2019) and American astronaut Sally Ride (2019).
