A few hours after the report that Washington is splitting from quarterback Alex Smith, reports began to point to the Bears as the next logical stop in Smith’s career.

Smith can make sense for Chicago because the Bears need a quarterback and because Smith has a strong relationship with coach Matt Nagy, who was the coach of the Chiefs’ quarterbacks and offensive coordinator during Smith’s five seasons in Kansas City.

Shortly after the Bears hired Nagy, Smith told the Chicago Tribune that Nagy is a tremendous trainer.

“He and I spent five years together and we were as close as possible to a technical-player relationship,” said Smith of Nagy. “To see him grow as a defender, then go to the coordinator and now I’m excited for him when he becomes a head coach. I think he will do well. “

Whether Smith competes for a starting job or is a veteran reserve, he is the type of player Nagy would like to have.
