Matt Harvey agrees to secondary league contract with Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE – Matt Harvey will try to revive his career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 31-year-old right-hand agreed on Saturday to a minor league contract with Orioles. He would receive a $ 1 million contract for a year if added to the list of 40 men and would have a chance to earn performance bonuses.

Harvey went 0-3 with an ERA of 11.57 in four matches and three relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals in 2020. His fastball averaged 94.5 mph, down from 97 mph in 2013.

An All-Star with the New York Mets in 2013, Harvey’s career was hampered by Tommy John’s surgery in October 2013 and an operation to correct thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016.

Harvey went 34-37 with an ERA 3.66 for the 2012 Mets until he traded to Cincinnati in May 2018. He moved to the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 and the Royals in 2020, and is 44-52 with an ERA of 4.14 out of 144 matches and eight relief appearances in his career.

He will try to win a job in a rotation led by All-Star John Means. Former All-Star Felix Hernandez and Wade LeBlanc will also be in the spring training Orioles with secondary league contracts, and rookies Dean Kremer and Keegan Akin can also compete.
