Massachusetts reports 3,110 new cases of COVID, 105 more deaths on Sunday, while the country exceeds 350,000 deaths during the pandemic

Massachusetts public health officials on Sunday reported 3,110 new cases of COVID-19 and 105 related deaths, while the death toll in the U.S. exceeded 350,000.

Sunday’s data, based on 44,831 new molecular tests, brings the estimated number of active cases to 79,261 across the state, according to the Department of Public Health. During the pandemic, at least 371,097 Massachusetts residents contracted COVID-19 and 12,341 died.

The weighted average rate of seven days of positive test is 8.42%, compared to a fall of 0.8% in September. Excluding the positive exams collected at colleges and universities, the state’s positivity is 9.28%, according to the DPH.

As of Sunday, at least 2,291 people are being treated at the hospital for COVID-19, including 416 in intensive care.

While mitigation measures recommended by the government, including wearing a mask, closing companies and offices and meeting limitations helped stem the spread earlier this year, many hospitals are overwhelmed, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease specialist. the country, to ABC News.

“The deaths are real deaths,” said Fauci, opposing President Donald Trump’s false claim on Sunday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inflated COVID-19 data. “I mean, all you have to do is go to the trenches, go to the hospitals, see what health professionals are dealing with. They are in very stressful situations in many areas of the country, hospital beds are stretched. People are running out of beds, running out of trained personnel who are exhausted now. “

Fauci argued that, until vaccines are more widely available, strict adherence to social distance and avoiding travel were the main ways to contain outbreaks.

As of Thursday, Massachusetts had received 285,050 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and administered 78,643 of those doses.

Nearly 200 towns and cities in Massachusetts are considered to be at high risk of spreading the virus.
