Massachusetts HS football coach resigned from the team’s use of anti-Semitic language in game calls

A football coach at a Massachusetts high school was fired on Wednesday after it was revealed that his team used anti-Semitic language in their calls during a recent game, according to reports.

Dave Maimaron, the head coach of Duxbury High School, was attacked after reports said his team called audible by using words like “Auschwitz”, “rabbi” and “dreidel” during the season’s opening on March 12. The team defeated Plymouth North 35-0.

“There is no place in our community, or in any community, for this type of hate speech,” said Duxbury School Committee President Kellie Bresnehan. “I am outraged, disappointed and deeply saddened to be here.”

The school canceled the next games at the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels. It is unclear whether or when future games will be played, officials said.

Maimaron, who has led Duxbury to a record 159-43 since 2005, issued a statement on Monday expressing remorse over the team’s “misconduct”, according to the Boston Herald.

“On behalf of the team and players of the Duxbury High School football team, I want to extend my apologies for the insensitive, crude and inappropriate language used in the game on March 12,” the statement said. “The use of this language was careless, unnecessary and, most importantly, damaging in appearance – inexcusable.”

The coach was not left out during Duxbury’s most recent game, a 37-0 victory over Silver Lake on March 19.

Maimaron also teaches in the school system. He was placed on paid administrative leave from his position as a teacher of special needs pending further investigation, the newspaper reported.

The Duxbury public school system issued a statement on Monday, saying it learned of the situation last week and “immediately” started an investigation, which is still ongoing. The authorities noted that the play call system was interrupted. They added that the language used during the game calls was not addressed to the opposing team or to any individual.

On Tuesday, the New England Anti-Defamation League called for “a large-scale independent investigation,” according to the Boston Globe.
