Eight people were injured as bullets flew in a firefight outside a subway station in northern Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon.
One suspect was in custody and two firearms were recovered at the scene, although police said it was not clear whether that individual was the sniper.
“It’s very brazen,” said Philadelphia police commissioner Danielle Outlaw in front of the Olney Transportation Center on Wednesday.
“We were able to put someone in custody as quickly as we did because we had police in the area working on another mission. So it’s not because of our lack of presence here, but it is very telling that people who are willing to get involved in that shootings are becoming more encouraged. “

The victims were aged between 17 and 71 and the severity of their injuries, although all were not life-threatening.
Police initially said seven people were injured, but CBS Philly reported on Wednesday night that an eighth victim entered a local hospital with grazed wounds.
Police found 18 bullet capsules at the scene.

Mayor Jim Kenney said he was “beyond nauseated”.
“I am very sick. I refuse to accept this emergency as normal,” said Kenney on Wednesday. “People have the right to travel between work and home, and around the city, without fear of being shot and possibly killed by reckless and indiscriminate shots.”
